About Us

We know the challenges many of us face.

ACM — Adaptive Culture Movement — began as one mentor's mission to open up adventure sport to people with disability. It's grown into a full movement: mentorship-first, community-built, and focused on getting people outdoors doing things they were told they couldn't.

"Accessibility means inclusivity. Everything we build starts there."

Mission

Open up adventure and recreation to people of all abilities, through mentorship-based, 1-on-1 support.

Approach

Every program starts with rapport — mentors with lived experience, not a generic support-worker model.

Community

Adventure is the entry point. What people leave with is confidence, connection, and a crew.

Funding

NDIS & ACM

How ACM programs work alongside NDIS funding — confirm the exact detail below with our team before publishing.

Using Your Plan With ACM

ACM programs are built to work alongside NDIS funding, including plan-managed and self-managed plans. If you're agency-managed, get in touch and we'll talk through what's possible.

Placeholder: confirm ACM's actual NDIS registration status (registered provider vs. plan/self-managed only) and which support categories your programs sit under (e.g. Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living, or Core Supports) before this goes live.

Which Support Categories Apply

  • Improved Daily Living Skills — building capability and confidence through mentored adventure activity
  • Social & Community Participation — group-based programs and community connection
  • Core Supports (in some cases, depending on your plan) — confirm case-by-case

Getting Started

  • Send us your plan details (or ask your plan manager to) via the Contact page or Get Involved form
  • We'll confirm which programs fit your goals and funding
  • Book in for an intro session — no obligation, no pressure

Safety First

Safety & Risk Management

Every ACM program is built around a simple rule: adventurous doesn't mean reckless. Here's how we manage risk.

Before Every Session

  • A risk assessment specific to the activity, venue, weather and each participant's needs
  • A pre-session check-in covering any changes to health, medication or ability since your last session
  • Clear briefing on equipment, signals and what to do if a session needs to stop early

During Sessions

  • Qualified mentors and instructors, matched to the activity (e.g. certified dive instructors for Scuba, water safety crew for Surf and Ocean Swimming)
  • Appropriate mentor-to-participant ratios — never less than 1:1 for higher-risk activities
  • First aid trained staff on-site for every session

Our Partners

Where we run programs with venue or activity partners — Melbourne Cable Park and others — their own safety protocols apply in addition to ours.

Placeholder: add ACM's actual insurance coverage (public liability, participant personal accident), incident reporting process, and any activity-specific accreditations once confirmed.

Questions Before You Join

If you or your family have any safety questions before your first session, ask — our mentors would rather answer it upfront than have you worry about it on the day.

Governance

Our Policies

Everything ACM commits to when it comes to keeping people safe, respected and supported. These are drafts pending formal legal review — see the note at the bottom.

Child Safety Policy

ACM is committed to the safety and wellbeing of every child and young person in our programs. All staff, volunteers and mentors working with minors undergo a Working With Children Check and induction before their first session.

  • Zero tolerance for any behaviour that puts a child at risk
  • Clear reporting pathway for any concern, with no barrier to raising it
  • 1-on-1 sessions with minors follow an "open door / visible at all times" rule
  • Regular review of this policy and mandatory refresher training for mentors

Disability Inclusion Policy

Every program is designed around the participant, not the other way around. ACM commits to reasonable adjustments across communication, physical access and program pacing.

  • Goals are set by the participant (or their support network), not assumed by ACM
  • Equipment and format adapted per person, not a one-size-fits-all approach
  • Ongoing feedback channels so participants can flag what's working and what isn't

Drug & Alcohol Policy

Given the physical nature of our programs, ACM maintains a zero-tolerance policy for participants, volunteers or staff attending a session under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

  • Any person showing signs of impairment will be asked to sit out that session, for their safety and others'
  • Prescribed medication is not affected by this policy — let your mentor know what you're taking as part of your pre-session check-in

Code of Conduct

All ACM staff, volunteers and mentors agree to a code of conduct covering respectful behaviour, appropriate boundaries, confidentiality of participant information, and reporting obligations.

Complaints & Feedback

If something isn't right, we want to know. Complaints can be raised via the Contact page, by phone, or in person with any mentor. We aim to acknowledge every complaint within 2 business days.

Privacy Policy

Covers how ACM collects, stores and uses your information, including sensitive information shared in Expression of Interest forms. Read the full Privacy Policy.

Important: these policies are a strong starting draft, not final legal documents. Get them reviewed by a solicitor or a disability/child-safety compliance consultant before publishing — particularly the Child Safety Policy, given mandatory reporting obligations vary by state.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we get asked most, from participants, parents and volunteers.

For Participants & Families

Is there a cost?

Many programs can be funded through NDIS — see our NDIS page. Others are subsidised through ACM fundraising. Ask us for exact pricing per program.

Do I need experience?

No. Every program starts from wherever you're at, including your first time trying it.

Can family or carers attend?

Yes, and for some participants we encourage it, especially for a first session.

What do I need to bring?

Varies by program — we'll send a checklist once your session is booked.

Is transport provided?

Not currently, but let us know if this is a barrier — we may be able to help.

What if I need to cancel?

No problem — just give us as much notice as you can so we can offer the spot to someone else.

For Volunteers

Do I need qualifications?

For most roles, no — enthusiasm and reliability matter more. Activity-specific roles may need a ticket or certification, which we'll flag.

What checks do I need?

A Working With Children Check and police check are required — see the Volunteer Hub for details.

How much time is expected?

As little or as much as suits you — from a single event to a regular weekly slot.

Is training provided?

Yes, every volunteer completes an induction before their first session.

Impact

Our Impact

ACM's first Annual Impact Report is coming once we've got a full year of data — here's the shape it'll take.

What We'll Report On

  • Total athlete experiences delivered, by program
  • Number of active mentors and volunteers
  • Funds raised and how they were allocated
  • Partner contributions (Austin Health, AQA Victoria, Melbourne Cable Park)
  • Participant outcomes and stories, where consent allows
Placeholder page — publish your first Annual Impact Report here once you have a full reporting period of data. Registered charities are expected to report annually to the ACNC; this page can mirror that report in a more visual, donor-friendly format.
